We now have one small hut for sleeping, an office with a loft, kitchen for cooking, eating and hang-out space, a tool shed, mushroom house and compost toilet. See Buildings page for details and photos

All buildings will have multiple water tanks to catch and store rain water.
Longer term building goals are a Sala ( community meeting space / gallery), a dorm for WWOOFers and workshop students, a small winery and a 2nd hut.
We have a outdoor, but private, passive solar hot water shower and we are cooking some of our meals in a solar oven. We are experimenting with many ways of solar cooking and hope to stop needing natural gas in 1 to 3 years.
We have solar power enough for our lights and charging phones, etc and hope to add to our solar system in the near future.
Some goals of Baan Rung Nok are
To leave 2/3rds of the land as native habitat for birds, rabbits, mongooses and other native animals.
To pump in no water, use no grid electricity and bring out no trash.
To be as nice as can be with little that can be stolen.
When finished to require less than 1 hour maintenance a day, including farming.

“บ้านรังนก” มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมด 3 ไร่ แต่ก่อนเคยเป็นป่าธรรมชาติที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ อยู่ใกล้กับอุทยานแห่งชาติศรีลานนา อ.แม่แตง จ.เชียงใหม่ แต่ถูกชาวบ้านถางพื้นที่เพื่อทำการเกษตร และใช้ปลูกพืชเชิงเดี่ยวมานานหลายปี จนในที่สุดดินก็เสื่อมสภาพลงและปลูกพืชไม่ได้ผลผลิต ทำให้ที่ดินถูกทิ้งร้างจนหญ้าธรรมชาติขึ้นปกคลุมทั่วพื้นที่ จนกระทั่งไรอันโชคดีได้มาเป็นเจ้าของ แต่ไรอันก็ยังไม่ได้ทำการปรับปรุงที่ดินมาจนตลอด 4 ปี ทั้งที่เดิมทีวางแผนจะปลูกไม้ยืนต้นทดแทนป่าที่เสียไป แต่หลังจากปล่อยพื้นที่ไว้ตามธรรมชาติเพียง 2-3 ปี หลังจากได้ที่ดินมา ก็พบว่าแท้จริงแล้วธรรมชาติก็สามารถเยียวยาตัวเองได้ (ได้ดีกว่าเราทำเสียอีก) เพราะมีต้นไม้หลากหลายพันธุ์เริ่มเจริญเติบโตขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติจนทั่วพื้นที่ จนปัจจุบันมีความสูงถึง 5-10 เมตรและให้ร่มเงาจนหญ้าที่เคยครองถิ่นเจริญเติบโตไม่ได้ ปัจจุบันเริ่มปรากฏไม้พุ่มขึ้นมากมาย และเกิดเป็นความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพในพื้นที่เพียง 3 ไร่ของเรา กลายเป็นระบบนิเวศน์ที่สมบูรณ์ที่มีสิ่งมีชีวิตมากมายอาศัยอยู่อย่างเกื้อกูลกัน
“บ้านรังนก” มีแขกน้อยคนนักที่เข้ามาแวะเยี่ยม คงมีแต่ชาวบ้านที่พลัดเข้ามาหาของป่าจนมาพบพวกเรา หลายคนไม่กล้าเข้ามาเพราะแค่เห็นโพรงหญ้ารกก็กลัวสัตว์มีพิษจะทำร้าย (ที่ทางเข้ามีรังแตนซ่อนอยู่หลังใบไม้ ทำหน้าที่เฝ้ายามเป็นอย่างดี ใครทะเล่อทะล่าเข้ามามักโดนต่อย) บ้างก็กลัวหาทางออกไม่เจอ แต่ส่วนมากที่ไม่เข้ามาเพราะคิดว่าในป่าไม่น่าจะมีสิ่งมีชีวิตที่เป็นคนอาศัยอยู่มากกว่า
เป้าหมายของบ้านรังนก
- 2 ใน 3 ของพื้นที่ปล่อยให้เป็นป่าธรรมชาติ ไม่เข้าไปรบกวน
- สามารถผลิตน้ำและไฟฟ้าด้วยกระบวนการที่เป็นมิตรกับธรรมชาติใช้เองภายใน ไม่นำเข้าระบบไฟฟ้าและประปาจากภายนอก
- มีของหายจากการถูกลักโขมยน้อยที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้
- เมื่อไหร่ที่สิ่งก่อสร้างทั้งหมดแล้วเสร็จ จะใช้เวลาเพีง 1 ชั่วโมงต่อวันในการซ่อมแซมมัน ที่เหลือแบ่งปันเวลาอย่างสมดุลกับการมีชีวิตอยู่เพื่อตัวเอง สังคม และโลกใบนี้

Raised & educated in Northern California, Ryan has called Asia home for 9 years.1/2 of the 9 years has been in Thailand. He started out WWOOFing in Thailand in 2001 and attended Rangsit University in Bangkok for one year. He spends a lot of time getting to know his photo subjects and very little time post-processing.He has held solo exhibitions at the Fuji Film Salon, The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand,The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan and the Nikon Salons in Tokyo and Osaka.

Public transportation from Chiang Mai:
Go to the US embassey and face the Namping River with the embassey to your back.
Then walk to your right through the intersection and just a bit further down you’ll see a Red Cross office on your right. After this you’ll see an alley on your right. Turn right down the alley and near the end you’ll see a few white trucks. One of the windows has a sign that says “Pun Pun Jon Jandai’s Farm”.
Sometimes a smaller white truck without the PunPun sign comes. It is good to say "PunPun" to the driver and if he seems to recognize it or nod then you can also be assured it’s the right truck.

He leaves from this spot everyday at noon but is parked there all morning after around 9am. It is good to either find the truck in the morning or arrange to be at the truck by 11:30am to make sure you can find it. It will take around 2-3 hrs to get to the farm because of stops with other villagers. You will be the last one off and the driver will point you to walk across the fields on the right side of the road.
You will see thatch roofs on the hill in front of you. This is our farm. Go through the gate and walk across the paddy fields. When you get to a T, (has a sign) take a left through the tamarind orchard. Follow the path to the PunPun Kitchen or Cafe and ask for Ryan's House. Someone will point you in the right direction and its just a few more mins walking.
